Cat5 spec is 100 meters
[K5KTF 2012-11-22- 17:20:51]: John, instead of 90 meters of CAT5, which I think would be too long for CAT5 spec, just get another node for the house, and they will mesh up. You can connect to the one in the garage and control it as if you were over a cable. Jim K5KTF

Dave/John: I have a node looking over the valley, at about 2850 East 3900 South 8dBi Omni I can connect to the out door node with an indoor node so I think I'm configured correctly but I cant see any other nodes. Wondering if I messed something.
Not quite line of sight to Johns house but close. A few trees in the path to Dave's house.

Wireless Rig Control?
Thanks for the suggestion.
That article is about Internet remote control - I am looking for 100% wireless remote control & operation via HSMM-Mesh.
Perhaps only a distance of 50-100', perhaps several miles, this to support Emcomm where the HF antenna (therefore the rig) has to be variably remote-located from the command post.

HSMM-Mesh Demos at Larger Hamfests?
The large Hamcation Hamfest in Orlando is in February and Dayton in May. Are there any plans to set up Demos of HSMM-Mesh at either? I hope to attend both & can bring my two operational units to participate in tests and to learn about ready-to-use apps. Thanks! David

I'm at the intersection of 2700 East and 3900 South. I have to figure out how and where to mount the antenna and also get a computer configured to do something like a webserver. I am thinking of getting 90 meters of cat5e so I can mount the antenna on the garage but stay in the house. I also have an omnidirectional antenna I can use in my car. |

Sounds like some fun. I have two routers configured and two unconfigured right now. I am looking for some gain antennas to get outside my neighborhood. I live about 3500 south and 2100 east. Where are you so I know which way I need to look? |

That's quite the distance, but if you're gonna try you'll want to check out some parabolic antennas. FAB has a good selection: http://www.fab-corp.com/ |

Dave, I am also in East Mill Creek and live about a mile from you. I attended the RACES conference and saw the demonstration and was also intrigued by it. Since that time I have got two routers and one antenna for nodes. Now to get them configured and online.
Scott, W7OXZ, also attended and is interested in it. If I heard him correctly, he is getting two nodes to play with.
Let me know if and when you would want to get together.
John

Help with antenna selection for 15 to 20 km range..
Hello, sorry to bring this up again, but I read a lot of posts and it seemed that I can't find a correct and detailed answer to my question. Here is my problem. I have 4 friends living within 20 km away from me. From my balcony I can pinpoint the direction of their houses in a 60 degree angle south east. We want to setup a mesh so that they can receive my signal and join my network vice versa. But I'm not quiet sure about the type of antenna we should buy in order to achieve this. Can somebody share his experience or help us with the right equipment that can work for the above scenario ? Any link to store will be just fine.... Thanks, Chris

HamChat Server
I had a chance to connect my node to a small mesh network during the YRARC Hamfest in Markham, ON. It was exciting. However, I realized that the biggest issue with mesh network is at the application level. We got connected and now what ? Can I pick up the mic and start talking ? VOIP is great but I thought that having some simple way of communicating right after connecting would be extremely useful. What I came up with is a simple chat server that can run on the router itself and does not require any special client software except the regular web browser. So far I tested it with IE 6, 7 and firefox 13. Feel free to give it a try. Your feedback is always welcome. Nikolai

Firmware for DLink Routers
Hello, I am new to the forum. I have just acquired a box of old DLink routers, and I was wondering whether there is any firmware that will run on them. Most of the firmware seems to be for Linksys routers. The model numbers for the routers I have are: DI-524, DWL-2100AP DWL-7000AP Also, is this system legal to use in the UK? Any help would be appreciated. Jack. |

Thanks to a post I converted two routers today and they are running and talking to each other. Now to find some gain antennae and get one of these outside to see who it can hear. My approximate coordinates are 2200 East and 3300 South in SLC.
I am open to things that work ane especially applications to run over Mesh.

Loading HSMM-MESH in WRT54x router running DD-WRT
I received a post yesterday and with a bit of courage I loaded up two routers and they are setup and talking to each other - now the fun begins.
I am now looking for some gain antennae so I can attempt to connect to something outside my home. I am looking for some chat, file sharing, and other apps to shoot across the ether now. I hope to find some keyboard to keyboard applications. I plan to do a gateway to the Internet when I can lock it down a bit. Thanks to the OM that posted the help and I am sure I will be asking more questions later 73 |

Go to User Documentation. Item #8 Firm Ware Installation. When you think it does not make total sense get with someone who has done it. There is one step left out. You have to disconnect the unit and then hook it up again so that youcan move forward. If there is no one in your area call me. Doug |
