Welcome to the Group
Doug,
I am a fellow long-time Linux guy.
Have you seen or tried rig control via HSMM-Mesh using a Linux app like flrig?
I have an emcomm app where such a setup for a Yaesu FT-450D would really be helpful.
WDYT?
Thanks! & 73, David KD4E |

New to Forrum - Firmware question.
I have WRT54GL v1.1 router, has LINKSYS firmware, which file do I use? Thanks, Ray kb3fww Sorry, I was reading way too much into the loading process. Reconfigured four routers with no problems. Two G's and 2 GL's. Ok, I spent four hours playing with the routers (4), the OLSR button is grayed out. on all 4 routers. Any help would be greatly accepted!

Could the 2.4 GHz SSB Electronics Oscar 40 dish antenna be used with HSMM-Mesh? It measures 20x44 and bolts together in the middle - so it may be shipped if I bought it. I have not been able to find gain numbers yet ... Thanks! David

Wireless Rig Control?
I'd like to control my recently-acquired Yaesu FT-450D wirelessly via HSMM-Mesh. Is this possible? We have an emcomm app here that needs this. There doesn't seem to be much out there about wireless rig control using 220, 440, 900, etc and although distance is a challenge HSMM-Mesh seems a natural.
May I use flrig or some other Linux-friendly rig-control app? I read that something like this was done in El Paso but didn't find details. Thanks! David

Can you describe your configuration? It sounds like something like this:
AP ----- MESHNODE(gateway) ----- Internet
or is it more like
AP ----- MESHNODE <<<<< >>>>> MESHNODE(gateway) ----- Internet I did something similar to the second arrangement on Wednesday and had no issues going to http://localnode:8080/ as well as internet sites. Are you able to go to the localnode page when directly plugged in or if the internet connection isn't plugged into the router?

Hi,
You'll want to look into commercial systems like Meraki or Open-Mesh.
HSMM-MESH is for amateur radio purposes.

Having an issue installing the packages ... I also have the "option force_space" line in /etc/ipkg.conf
root@KJ4IZW-1:~# ipkg -force_space install libopenssl_0.9.8i-3.2_mipsel.ipk Installing libopenssl (0.9.8i-3.2) to root... ipkg: //usr/lib/ipkg/info/libopenssl.control: No space left on device
root@KJ4IZW-1:~# df -h Filesystem Size Used Available Use% Mounted on none 7.0M 2.5M 4.5M 36% /tmp /dev/mtdblock/4 1.0M 1.0M 0 100% /jffs mini_fo:/jffs 2.2M 2.2M 0 100% /
I was able to install the first 3 deps (libncurses, libpopt, zlib).
I see that /var is symlinked to /tmp ... Can I put /usr (or a sub-dir of it) on /tmp as well? Any recommendations? Or am i doing something else wrong? Or is hardware insufficient?
This is on a WRT54GL v1.1 (S/N:CL7C) .... I also have a WRT54G v2.0 (CDF5) mesh node. Have a couple VOIP phones (PolyCom 501) arriving soon.

I have a v7 wrt54g connected to my mesh node. This is allowing me to access the mesh via standard WiFI connection. I am able to bring up internet this way no problem.
In the past with the same set up I was able to pull up the localnode and meshh status pages the same way. I no longer can bring up the localnode on my WiFi connected device. Is this a change in the new firmware? if so it ruins 98% of what we planned to use the mesh for. Is there a workaround? any suggestions? |

Toronto / York Region Introduction
The Toronto, Ontario Forum welcomes you!
Members and friends of the York Region Amateur Radio Club (YRARC) are building a HSMM-mesh for the northern Greater Toronto Area (GTA). The project commenced Oct 2012.
This mesh will be used primarily as an emergency communication backup system for EMCOM / ARES Regional government-support agencies. It may also be used for casual linking and testing by node owners.
If You Are Thinking of Building a Mesh- READ THIS FIRST:
*Although mesh nodes communicate over Wi-Fi frequencies, they only talk to other mesh nodes on the wireless port.
*You can NOT use Wi-Fi to connect to a mesh node from your computer, netbook, smart phone or other wireless device.
For the YRARC website please visit: WWW.YRARC.ORG
There is also a Yahoo Groups forum used by the friends and members of YRARC.
Please visit at: groups.yahoo.com/group/yrarc/
Much of the HSMM-mesh discussion was happening on the Yahoo Group but will hopefully migrate to this Forum.
Those interested in discussing other Toronto Area mesh-cells are invited to post right here!
The HSMM-mesh provides an excellent introduction to microwave antennas, sighting and propagation. It's a good introduction to Wi-Fi software, hardware set-up . It's best if used with an "off-grid" power supply, requires little current and is YOUR opportunity to participate in EMCOM /ARES support.
YRARC mesh nodes are being installed from the north end of City of Toronto (Steels Ave) to Northern York Region (Georgina). East from Markham and West to Allisiston Ontario. This will obviously change with time and will be mapped and displayed here.
Hope to see you on Forum and On The Air!

Chris,
In the "HSMM-MESH Info" box on the left side of this page, there is an item labeled "HSMM Files". Scroll down near the bottom to "Hamcom 2011 Advanced Configuration by Rusty Haddock, AE5AE". That is the PDF file I was linking. It appears the editor deleted my blank line before the "-Brian/KY9K" and that made it part of the link.

Hello Brian,
I'm having a problem with the link you provided. I kept on receiving an error message '404 component not found'. I logged in but it does not work still...
Can you please verify the link ?

Welcome to the Group
Hey folks, Glad to see something going on with HSMM-Mesh in our area, even though we're a bit of distance apart. I'm involved with a very active ARES group here in Hardin County, and we're just beginning to look at the possibilities of meshed networks for emergency comms with and between some of our served agencies. I'm a network and Linux geek for a living, and have been using DD-WRT on a few routers for several years. Excited to know that the Ham community has jumped on this concept and is putting it to work! I have a couple test nodes set up to test with, and many others in our group are itching to get started and see how it can serve our ARES as well. Hope to have a quick "proof of concept" presentation to the whole group at our next meeting a week from tonight. I appreciate all the work that you guys and the rest of the folks here on the forum have done, and would love to have you guys the Henderson/Evansville group as a resource as far as finding out what works well and what may not work so great with implementing this. Take care, and keep up the good work! 73, Doug, K4EK

Hello,
yes I did it on the computer that sits behind the router. Is it possible to do it on the router that controls the entire network ? ( sort of nodes controller router).
Thanks |

Give teamspeak a shot. It's quite simple to setup and the easiest method (if you don't want to forward ports) is to put the teamspeak server in the DMZ. KJ4ZQG and I tried this out and it worked without fault. I just prefer taking the computer out of the picture.
You could also try the asterisk guide I wrote with a software VoIP phone you would just install on to your computer. That should work equally as well. |
