Yes. I originally did it on the node (I still do). You can find the discussion under the VoIP thread: http://hsmm-mesh.org/hsmm-mesh-forums/view-postlist/forum-9-voip/topic-284-asterisk-running-natively-on-hsmm-mesh-node.html Please read through the whole 2 pages worth of discussion. In the document attached in the last post, you can skip over step 1 in "Configuring the VoIP phone." Seems a lot to ask of a little System on a Chip (Brain on a Stick?) but it could be interesting. It works fine. I've sustained multiple 2+ hour phone calls without experiencing a degradation in audio and node performance. |

Asterisk 18
I'm just beginning to read about Asterisk implementations, and so far the Raspberry PI is attractive. However, I see on the OPEN-WRT site that there is an Asterisk package that seems suited for installation directly to a node. I haven't looked to see if it's in the package repository for BBHN yet.
So, has anyone tried to implement an Asterisk PBX on a node, and succeeded? Is it practical, or is the Raspberry PI a better approach?
Seems a lot to ask of a little System on a Chip (Brain on a Stick?) but it could be interesting.

So looking at it, it seems pretty difficult. There is no easy solution. In older versions of FreePBX, that feature was available, but now it has been depreciated. This is the only thing I have found, but I cannot get it to work. https://issues.asterisk.org/jira/browse/ASTERISK-9131?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:all-tabpanel exten=> s,1,Answer() exten=> 999,1,Set(mohclass = my-music) exten=> 999,2,Queue(my-queue|tn) exten=> 999,3,Hangup() |

WRT54G frequency change
I've debanded just about all my bbhn nodes a year ago and wasted $70 doing so. Luckily, I kept the original crystal installed and created a switch to switch between the two so I could still use them. You can deband your router, but you risk each one not being able to connect to the another. They will see each other in a wifi scan, but due to other internal circuitry under that metallic hood, the oscillator will not lock onto the new frequency and you will be SOL. And as a side note, changing the crystal also changes the timing with the on-board serial connector thus rendering it useless to standard serial-enabled appliances. My recommendation is to just leave it alone and stick on 2.4GHz. |

any thought on changing the freq on the wrt54g to better use the bands we have? it looks like if we can change out the 20 MHZ crystel to 10.24MHz we will be in the 23 cm band.

Raspberry PI & Asterisk
First off, a big thanks to KF5JIM for making it a snap to get this going. I currently have 3 hardware IP phones and 3 ATAs on my 6 BH nodes. Back when there was a discussion of hold music vs FCC rules, I posted a question that didn't receive an answer, since this topic is active I figure I'll give it a try here. I have a Morse code wav file similar to what one would use as a CW ID for a voice repeater that I want to take the place of the stock FreePBX MOH in all instances of operation. In Settings->Music On Hold I found I had to create a new Category (I called it "Mesh"), and in Connectivity change both my Inbound and Outbound Routes (Google Voice) from "default" to "Mesh" and then my wav file would play when the off-Mesh party was put on hold. For the life of me, I can't find where to change the MOH from "default" to "Mesh" for extension to extension calls within the PBX. Does this have to be done from the CLI? Thanks for any help!

From my experience, services are only listed when another node is present. The only thing I can think of is to make sure the SSID's are the same across the nodes and each one has a unique host name. If all else fails, you could reflash both of them with bbhn-1.0 firmware and try again leaving everything default. As for internet, make sure you have checked internet gateway and have an Ethernet cord plugged into the WAN port of that node and a router on the other end.
What version routers are you using? |

Well, that helped, atleast now I know I am looking in the right spot. I have another issue somewhere else. I can see my other node when I do a scan, but at the status page, I do not see it as a neighbor, and I dont see any services listed. Any ideas? I followed the I struction on this site to set up irc, but I dont my other node, so I dont see it advertised anywhere. Am I missing somethig in the setup that is not letting mynode apear as a neighbor? |

KI6WDY,
If you connect the same phone adapter to the same mesh node, it will assign it the next available IP address unless it does not have the MAC address permanently assigned to an IP address or it is still in the dhcp lease. If it gets assigned a different IP address, your registration settings will update asterisk with the newest IP information. |

where do I see the advertised services?
I have 2 nodes ready to go, 24DBI antennas, and 2 more of everything on the way. I have added IRC to one of my nodes, and set it to advertise that service, but from my second node, I can see the first node, but I don't see any services? I'm not sure where to look. I assumed that when I would do a scan, that it would show services there, but it isn't. I have several others interested, but nobody is ready to bite the bullet until they can see the practical side, and right now, all i am doing is showing that I can pick up every wifi hotspot on the block, but I cant communicate with my other node. I also tried setting up the first node as a gateway, but I am unable to connect to the internet with my second node. I have a feeling that I am missing something. I am running bbhn-1.0.0 on both nodes. Any ideas?

Got everything working out to the VOIP A-D phone adaptors, now I need to find a coupel of analoge phones to fully test the system. Also I noticwed that the trick with the fake clock loaded up but it did not fake the system, I hooked up a network wire from my Internet gateway to the WAN connection on the mesh router and that made it able to set up extensions. So I suspect that when I want to add more extensions to my mesh I will have to have a Internet connection to do so. I am now wondering it I connect the same phone adapter to the same mesh node if it will assign the same IP to it? |

Greetings from western MD
Craigslist has provided a router for the third and "final" N8ONW node. The plan with this one is to get it on the roof with a decent antenna to act as the beacon for my other nodes to connect to the rest of town. |

WRT54G firmware crash!
AF7J,
The 169 address you got was an 'autoconfigure' one. That happens because the router does not start serving IP addresses because it is not configured correctly, or is still booting. If you reboot the router, windows loses connection, and restarts the network card.
If the router is blinking the power light, it has some smarts still. If you fried one of the chips no guaratees, but you can try the process at:http://blog.irrashai.com/blog/2008/09/how-to-debrick-a-wrt54g-router/
Because of the connection issue, it is important that you put a hub between your router and your machine. If you have a hub, windows will keep the connection open, and you can ping 192.168.1.1 to see if the router is responding.
Thanks

I used the latest RasPBX image, so I had Asterisk working, then I added the OSLR and OSLR plugin packages. I've not tried HSMM-Pi on RasPBX, I tried it on a rasbian without luck, but RasPBX is rasbian based, so it should work. |

TP-Link video camera node port configuration confusion?
Ok got it to work I had to switch both nodes over to NAT mode which changed all the addressing but no big deal. Plugged the camera in and I got a DHCP lease that came up on 172.27.0.5. Created a port forward at the camera node "Outside 8100, 127.27.0.5, Lan Port 80. Connected to the camera with NODE-B:8100 and it was video! Awesome!
