Field Day 2012 was a good day to test and demo HSMM-Mesh. We setup a packet station for winlink. We ran a laptop running the email server connected to the radio and a node. The other node was connected to a router and connected through the mesh and sent and received email using only a web browser. It was a big hit at field day.

AMD Austin now has it’s own HSMM-Mesh node.

Special Thanks to the AMD Austin Amateur Radio Club, AMD and N5YC.

Just flashed a WRT54G-TM and it's now working perfectly. Maybe I went the long way around the barn, but here's how I went from the stock -TM firmware to the HSMM-MESH firmware...

I first followed the instructions found here to load DD-WRT...

http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=212455#212455

Once that was done, I used the built-in flash utility found in DD-WRT to load the HSMM-MESH firmware using the binary for a WRT54GS.

Reacquiring a DHCP address can easily be done by simply unplugging your Ethernet cable (when you're "wired in"), waiting a few seconds, and then reattaching your cable. This should work for any OS on your PC. -Rusty-

I'm not familiar with the way N1MM works.  I looked at the docs and the network setup is a bit unusual.  Every node would require specific configuration and they would not be interchangeable.

It may be easier to just set every node to use DMZ Mode on the LAN.  5 hosts should be fine.  This way all computers can directly talk to one another and port forwarding is not necessary.  You will still want to use the same node with the same computer (don't swap them) and be sure to use a dhcp address reservation so that nothing changes after a reboot or power cycle.

Treat the computers as having a direct internet connection.  The IP addresses of the nodes will be irrelevant to the N1MM setup because NAT is not used.  The address of each computer will be unique and they should be the ones entered into the N1MM software.

Yes, N3JFP's FD Loggert (Network) does work very easily on the mesh. I just wish it had more features like N1MM. I understand that getting N1MM to work via the mesh is a bear, but if anyone has it working and can give some instructions on how to set it up properly to work via mesh it would be gratefully appreciated.

N3FJP does just that and works beautifully over mesh. KTF

Were building a logging database that flags dups etc....    Plus one node set up with a laptop outside the "Circle"  for visiting hams to make a 13cm contact with.

Topic : N1MM networking via mesh nodes - Error

I am having some trouble networking N1MM on a HSMM-Mesh network and I could use some help.

I can ping the nodes and I am able to map (shared) network drives using the wireless IP of each router eg.

\\10.210.31.197\N1MM Logger

But N1MM gives me the following error message in Networking mode...

Show Status for Station 2
Station: 1:Station 2 on 10.156.33.85 (port 12071) - Status: Closed as Client via local port 12086
CQ Freq: 0.00 Pass: 0.00
Echo never received or connection closed.

N1MM Network config as follows...

Network Names:
0:Station 1 10.210.31.197
1:Station 2 10.156.33.85

If I can get these 2 to work with N1MM I can get the other stations working.

Can anyone help?

Easiest way after flashing a router to a node is make sure your PC is in DHCP mode, then after the router starts rebooting, reboot the PC. There are other ways to re-grab the DHCP IP, if you look around on the site (like the STARTING-READ THIS FIRST and STEP-BY-STEP either PDF or PPT files)

If you're using Windows, make sure your DHCP lease isn't still the 192.xxx.xxx.xxx address from when you flashed the router with the new firmware.  I've had to manually refresh the IP address after loading the HSMM-MESH firmware before.

To check, open up the command prompt, execute an "ipconfig" command.  If it says your laptop's IP address is still a 192.xxx.xxx.xxx then execute an "ipconfig /release" and then an "ipconfig /renew" (all commands without the quotes).

Hope that helps,

David, KC0ALC

I am connected on my Laptop's LAN Connector to one of the ports on the back of the WRT54G.

Are you wired into the lan side of the node or are you trying to do all of this over wireless?

Topic : HSMM Node Connectivity

I just flashed the HSMM Software to an old WRT54G Router.  I was able to setup the Node, and can see Ad Hoc network on my laptop.  However, when I tried to access the Web Panel to use the device, I could not.  It is not responsive at localnode:8080, w4dtb-1:8080, 172.27.0.1 and I have tried ping (to see if it was the browser).

What should I try in order to connect to the web interface and how do I reset the thing back to the setup page?

FYI, FWIW, IYGARA: Technically, 54-Mb/s is more like a "modulation rate". The highest theoretical data rate would be about 27-Mb/s less overhead for TCP/IP when not compressing the data stream. As the s/n ratio decreases the max rate will drop accordingly as 802.11g changes modulations. Keep in mind, too, that 1 mile/5.5-microsecs is the speed limit (pesky speed of light) so effective throughput will suffer somewhat over long distance hauls. -Rusty-

Topic : Node Internet Sharing

Playing around with one of my nodes I decided to set it up as a Gateway. I enabled the Gateway box, save & reboot, and nothing happened. NT5LA let me know about putty, and how I needed to edit the config file for it to work (because I tinker before I read lol). So we did, and still no internet.

After messing with it a couple days I got it to work! The main problem was I enabled the Gateway box before editing the config file.

I had to un-check the Gateway box, save & reboot, re-check the Gateway box, save & reboot. After this it started working fine. I did change the Wan DNS servers to 4.2.2.2 & 4.2.2.3 just because I always use them.

For my configuration I used a static ip on the wan side. I use an Untangle sever for my firewall with 6 nics. I configured one of the nics on Untangle to 192.168.0.1, and gave the Wan ip of the node 192.168.0.2 with 192.168.0.1 as the gateway. Then I bound one of my external static ip's to the Mesh nic in Untangle. Works pretty good!

Hope that helps someone that enabled the box first lol,
Rich ~ W5RCH
