Topic : What does HSMM stand for?

Really?  Thank you.  Perhaps the connection will become clearer as I continue to learn.

In any event, by whatever name HSMM-MESH seems a useful and worthwhile thing.  I know of no other way of creating a mesh network that is so easy; no other in which most of the pitfalls have been fallen into, and safely covered over, by the developers.  Bravo.

I've got one node running.  It's lonely, though -- it has no other nodes to talk to, here in Oregon (Tualatin), where I'll be for another couple weeks.  Then the motor home heads for Dayton, where I'll bet it hears plenty others.

You got it right with High Speed Multi Media.

Topic : What does HSMM stand for?

After readinbg the article What's In A Name and several others, I'm still wondering:  what does HSMM stand for in the name HSMM-MESH?  Mesh, now, I understand.  But HSMM?

Google found several HSMM acronyms:  High School Musical Mania, High Speed Multi Media, many others.  None seem related to what HSMM-MESH does.  So what's HSMM?

I tried putting the relevant section for connecting IRC servers together here but the formatting went all to hell.  Here's a short URL for the latest version of the installation instructions for ngIRCd.  The part you want is at the end.

Let me know if you need more help!

Thank you. I did get past that part of my issues. Next I am trying to figure out how to get two servers to connect to each other over the MESH.

First off, thanks to ve3tsa and k5ktf for the hints using PuTTY and the 2222 port. That did the trick. On to KC7NEC's request, if he hasn't already got an answer. Login to the primary node, having the irc server running, just like you did to set it up. Issue the command: /etc/init.d/ngircd stop It should respond with 'Terminated'. Now, you can vi the config file. Do a 'start' to reignite the server. BTW, most init.d scripts have several commands, like 'start' and 'stop'. Dale. KG5LT

Guess I will ask this here..... I am planning on adding a secondary server to another node. How do I stop the server running on the first node so I can vi into the config file to make the needed changes?

Try holding the reset button down for about 15 seconds then connecting to the node. Can you give me screen shots of what you see?

When it tells you that it is done, does it look like a linksys page or something else?

Thanks for the response. It has the IP 172.27.0.5 but when I connect to localnode:8080 it responds with done, and does nothing else. I know I am very close.

On that free cut-it-out-and-glue-on-foil reflector, YES! I have used that, and it can get you from NO signal to usable signal.

In fact, if you have the 9dbi rubber duck (twice as long as stock), you can fit TWO, one on top of the other, and get even more.

But it DOES work, as cheap as it is. Best for internal use, as the wind would knock it around.

After you have done the firmware update, have you released your local adapter and then refreshed it. You should have an IP on your computer of 172.27.0.5 then try and connect to the localnode:8080. Just a thought, hope it helps Andrew NT5LA

Topic : DIY Antenna's?

I have been searching for 2.4GHz designs and the one I want to play with is the slotted waveguide. Having spent some time as a machinist, and getting my new-to-me horizontal mill setup I should be able to work on making one by summer. Finding the best tape to cover the slots will be the biggest problem. My other choice would be a co-linear made out of LMR-400. I have a couple lenghts from a satelite install here where I work, just need to get hold of some 5/16 brass tubing. Bigger problem is coming up with some hardware to test antennas. Anyone have a 2.4GHz SWR Bridge just laying around?

Topic : 70cm Option!!

Down here in the Rio Grande Valley there is a bit of distance between some of the towns and cities. I could see putting a lower frequency system at my home and one where I work, in Brownsville and tieing them to a 54G based mesh at each end. its a 20 mile distance with low population, and I'm not sure there are any hams that would participate in between.

The allowance for a ham call and the way we declare we are using it is more what defines these devices as being under part 97. Just like the old commercial radios I have used on 2m and 440. When I retuned them they became part 97 devices. We have re-purposed these and they can now fall under part 97.
