I guess my post was confusing but I fully intend to use Broadband-Hamnet for amateur radio use and it will NOT be used to replace my personal internet connection. By home access point in my previous post I simply meant the Hamnet node that I have installed as a base station at my personal residence. I am trying to connect that node to the internet while maintaining use under Part-97 that is why I am using a whitelist only firewall setting. My question is what IP addresses do I need to whitelist to allow the node to connect to Broadband-Hamnet's fireware update and package servers. Thanks.

Ok. Thanks for the information. My current WRT54GL installation has been running with a 5 volt PoE power supply so I guess I'm lucky that that worked. Setting up my mobile node to run on 12 volts will be much simpler. Thanks.

And just to be clear.

WRT54G version 1 - 5 V

WRT54G v1.1, WRT54GS v1, WRT54GL v1 and all other versions use 12V.

Also, the "12V" models will actually take a fairly wide range of voltages.  This post indicates 4-16V.

I'm not sure there's an official spec from the manufacturer, so use that info with caution.

The only WRT54G-series device that uses 5v are the WRT54G v1 routers.

Yes.

Also, please note that from the home page it states:
Broadband-Hamnet™ is intended for amateur radio use and passing amateur radio traffic. It is NOT intended to replace your personal Internet connection. It is a “feature” that Broadband-Hamnet™ can be connected to the Internet. General Internet access is not its primary purpose. Use your personal Internet connection under Part-15 FCC rules, to serve that purpose.

I am planning on linking my home access point to the internet through a firewall while remaining compliant. To do this I am blocking all traffic except a whitelist of part 97 compliant sites. I was wondering if this site had a static IP so that my nodes could access updates and future packages. Thanks.

I am in the process of mounting a WRT54GL in my car and had a question in regard to power. I remember reading somewhere that the device requires 5 volts of power, which is what I used to power my other node via PoE, but the included power supply with my new one says 12V/1A. Any suggestions for mobile power?  Thanks.

We are looking at ballons. I ran across this video on wifi via tethered balloon. Used for "wardriving" in this application (circa 2008). They use a 6 foot tethered balloon filled with helium at 150 feet, carrying at 3.5lb payload. The basic payload consisted of a WRT54G router, a CCD camera with pan & tilt control, an omni-directional, a directional antenna and a fiber optic transceiver and a couple of 9v batteries all packaged in a small Igloo Mini-Mate cooler. The concept could be easily adapted for HSMM for use during special events or possibly emergencies. Could provide excellent covering of 5 - 10 miles or more in urban areas Here's the link to the video http://youtu.be/oRgITWJrBY8 and a link to the presentation https://www.defcon.org/images/defcon-16/dc16-presentations/defcon-16-hill.pdf

Topic : Teamviewer Remote Control Thru MESH?

Has anyone been able to get TeamViewer to work through a mesh network? I'm not having much luck.Frown

I'm trying to remote control a PC running HRD with an HF rig, Signalink USB and remote control cable on it, using Teamviewer through the MESH only (no Internet).

This all works fine on my local network and from just about any location through the Internet.

Teamviewer works through a LAN connection or any computer that has Internet surfing capability (ports 80, 443 or 5938). I've tried both NAT and Direct (not quite sure which to use), DHCP Reserved addresses, forwarded all 3 ports for the 2 pc's. It tries to connect but then errors out with unknown reason.

Testing now to see if I can get it to work between two pc's on the same node. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Dennis

Does anybody know somebody on the Forums Committee about a BBHM forum? I do not yet know enough about BBHN to lead a forum, but I'd be willing to help. Another idea...last year FreeDV had a booth inside HARA Arena and I helped demo the technology. Is there an organization that might be willing to help sponsor a booth? Again, I'm just getting started in this but I'd be willing to help. 73, Harry Bloomberg W3YJ hbloomb@gmail.com

Airplane use is going to be somewhat less useful than you might think.

Unless your ground stations are using beam antennas and tracking the plane, the node in the plane will pick up every civilian wifi or other 2.4 GHz station in the coverage area, and it won't be able to pick the correct ground station out of the noise.   Even if the ground station hears the aerial station, you won't be able to communicate if the aerial station can't hear you.

You'll get some benefit, especially if you're in an area without a lot of wifi and other 2.4 GHz users

These days, even in the country, there are a lot of people with wireless routers, bluetooth, cordless phones, etc.

Long distance 802.11g usually means beam antennas on both ends.

In general, you should not use higher than normal power, except in very special circumstances.   Instead of high power, use a high gain beam antenna and/or higher location.

Just using an amp doesn't work that well because you still have to hear the other mesh node.  Unless the other mode is high power as well, you won't hear him.  You also still get interference from all the other 2.4 GHz civilian users.  Also, due to the way 802.11g and OFDM work, you interfere badly with the standard wifi users.

[N9CNM 2013-12-27- 03:19:22]:

Hello all,

I am new to HSMM having started yesterday. I want to go buy some routers and am confused as to which to buy and which will work. I think I want:

1) Works with the current BBHN firmware

2) Has detachable antennas

3) High power option

and I need to know where to buy from. I see the list of supported hardware but do not know how to determine which has a detachable antenna.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

John, N9CNM

Also, ask around in your local area's 'online classified' section. (( Some places have a 'freecycle' or FaceBook classified page. )) Second hand stores are another source, computer stores. Of the four nodes I have, three I bought new, one was a freebie just for the cost of asking on a Facebook page.

If you don't need web access to BBS you can use very popular software XFBB which you can complie and setup under Raspberry PI

Due to encryption and ham use, make sure you disable HTTPS access. Read carefully the instructions in the above link (and the text in the pictures) for instructions on how to do this.

This is what I as referring to:

where you can see how to setup webgui Citadel on other port instead defult 80, you can select 8080 or 8000

If you are installing a true BBS, no. You will just be running two programs simultaneously on your RPi. Should you try to install Citadel, you will encounter problems with the webgui as both have their default http port on port 80. If you were to do a BBS that uses telnet, you might have to pop a hole into the RPi's firewall.
